We've finally arrived at two of the best episodes in the entire series and what myself and many consider to be the climax of Shippuden: 166 + 167. It's very easy to forget there's four other episodes to talk about here that also feature some pretty great moments! So without further ado: Episode 163 - Explode!
Sage Mode Naruto returns and discovers that the village has been devastated by Pain's attack. Naruto requests that everyone stay back as he prepares to take on all six paths of Pain at once. Episode 164 - Danger! Sage Mode Limit Reached Naruto successfully begins taking out Pain's bodies one after another, but when his Sage Mode reaches its limit, Pain attempts to take control of the battle. Is the moment of Pain's victory at hand, or does Naruto have a plan?
Episode 165 - Nine-Tails, Captured! Pain's God Realm finally enters the battle. As Naruto's toad allies fall one by one, the situation begins to look grim. Can Naruto defeat Pain? Episode 166 - Confession As Pain tells Naruto about why he does what he does, Hinata appears on the scene and confesses her feelings to Naruto. In order to save him, she attacks Pain, but the latter is about to push Naruto over the edge!
Episode 167 - Planetary Devastation Naruto's rage pushes him to unleash six of the Kyubi's tails against Pain. In order to combat this menace, Pain is forced to rely upon his most powerful technique to stop Naruto. Will Pain succeed in defeating Naruto, or will the most unexpected of allies appear to calm Naruto down? Episode 168 - The Fourth Hokage The Fourth Hokage appears in Naruto's mind and prevents him from foolishly setting the Kyubi free.
Will this confrontation between father and son give Naruto the confidence he needs to stop Pain once and for all? Previous Thread: MVP? He is very convincing, especially his 'what about my family, my friends, my village' because the series has been very leaf village centric so far, and let's be honest, they've probably done just as many bad things and committed the same atrocities as the other villages, and I think Pain brings up a very good point, they are no better or special than anyone else.
I also love the moment where Naruto says he's gonna bring peace to the world and Pain is just 'oh, that is noble of you. He actually managed to break Naruto with words, and is the first villain to manage that.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds himself agreeing with a lot of pain's ideas and points, they do make sense and he makesquite a compelling case, considering the Shinobi world really is a shit hole like he says. He's a very deep villain, with a good morally grey kind of motivation. My pain.IS STILL FAR GREATER THAN YOURS! Was an awesome line btw, love that moment. Absolutely great episodes. Hinata standing up to Pain was the moment where a lot of people were won over with her getting together with Naruto and deservingly so. I only wish that the art style (not animation) hadn't taken such a deep downgrade because Kyuubi Naruto vs Pain almost seems comical when it's supposed to be highly serious.
Naruto Shippuden Episode 163
Also here's a fun fact: in the entire franchise, episode 166 is the only time where is ever brought up. She's never mentioned anywhere else in the manga, novels, or movies and also has purple hair, which is actually Hinata's hair color in the manga. People hate the Pain vs.
Six Tails episode, but I love it. Parts are really goofy and don’t super fit with the tone of the series (Looney Tunes run, looney tunes hammer) but it does a really good job of emphasizing the powers of these two characters.
Naruto repelling the push was amazing, the over the top shots of Nagato struggling to perform Chibaku Tensei really showed just how hard he was working to win, and is undercut by his admission that his was just a baby meteor. This episode is the over the top representation of two god like characters who still have to give it literally everything they have in order to win and reinforce their ideals - Pain is suffering as he struggles to fight a rampaging beast, both in physical form and psychologically. Naruto doesn’t know the answer to ending the cycles of hatred, but his conviction that, at the very least, Pains answer is wrong, is perfectly referenced by his monstrous and unthinking form. And that itself is solidified once he talks to Minato - hes proven he can hold his own in combat, but now, his convictions are just as strong. Sorry for the wall of text, I just love this fucking fight.
It's my favorite episode of TV anime, not my favorite fight, but the episode itself is one of a kind and something entirely of it's own. The lunacy of the situation more than calls for the outrageous and exaggerated theatrics of the fight. Consider the power ceiling prior to this fight. The 4-tails nearly killed Jiraiya off screen.
Naruto peaks at 8 tails in this episode. That's several orders of magnitude stronger from a power scaling perspective and blows our previous power ceiling out of the water. Naruto doesn’t know the answer to ending the cycles of hatred, but his conviction that, at the very least, Pains answer is wrong, is perfectly referenced by his monstrous and unthinking form. Beautifully said.
I really cannot say enough good things about this episode. Welcome back to a series called The Top 1%. Where we take a closer look at the truly exceptionally animated Shippuden episodes, as well as give a background to the underappreciated staff members that brought Kishimoto's manga to life. Up this week we've got Episode 166: Confessions Script, Storyboard, and Episode Director: Toshiyuki Tsuru Animation supervisor: Hirofumi Suzuki Key animators: Tokuyuki Matsutake, Masayuki Kouda, Yasuyuki Ebara, Yoshihiro Maeda, Takahiro Fujii, Yukiko Ban, Keiichi Ishida, Hisashi Samejima, Rinako Nishihara, Tatsuya Koyanagi, Xiao Zhu, Hiromi Taniguchi, Atsuko Nakajima Manga adaptation: ONLY Chapter 436 The Pain Invasion Arc in the anime is really an outsourced mess. Production on this arc sadly coincided with the 4th Shippuden Movie - The Lost Tower and as a result, the in-house staff was depleted. There's a couple well animated episodes prior to this but you would expect better for what is widely considered to be the best arc in the manga. I can more than forgive them however because 166 + 167 are two of the best back-to-back episodes of TV anime of all time.
Today we are going to take a closer look at Toshiyuki Tsuru's 166. There are a lot of parallels between this episode and Shikamaru's bout with depression back on episode 82. Mainly from an emotional story-telling perspective but also in the way that they take the limited source material and elevate it to a level that gives you goosebumps while watching. I mentioned during the episode 82 write-up how Toshiyuki Tsuru is a master at presenting the emotional side of Naruto, and Hinata vs.
Pain is no exception. Tsuru unfortunately wouldn't be seen on another canon episode after this one until 478 -Unison Sign, almost six years later.
In the meantime he could be found directing OP 8 - Diver, OP 9. Directing most of the Power filler arc episodes 290-295, a few Naruto movies, directing OP 19 and then finally his return for the aforementioned 478. This is as good a time as any to look at the man responsible for animating Tokuyuki Matsutake. If you ever doubted the importance of business connections, look no further than Matsutake because he's built tons of them over his almost 30 year career in the industry.
In fact, the animation supervisor for this episode, Hirofumi Suzuki, is his fellow classmate. They both studied animation under Atsuko Nakajima in the early 90's and went on to work together on a huge number of projects. On Ranma 1/2 they would encounter Norio Matsumoto, and as I've said before, Norio knows talent when he sees it. This connection would then of course lead them to Naruto a few years later where both Suzuki and Matsutake have made tremendous contributions to!. I highly recommend playing on loop as you read this.
The OST selection and usage for this episode is perfect and I'm sad I cannot do it justice through these gifs with no sound. Our episode begins over a dozen years prior; the Leaf village still intact and announcing his dreams to become the Hokage.
Pain already has Naruto pinned to the ground from the last episode, he wastes no time in and challenging. The way that are woven between the present day narrative throughout the episode is outstanding. Back to present day, This scene serves to break up the flashback into segments, otherwise it risks lingering on the same setting for too long. A failed heiress in the eyes of her father, the one person in a position to love her unconditionally sees her as a total failure. This entire scene is pretty heartbreaking when you consider she's done nothing wrong to deserve this. It's further compounded when she after storming out of the dojo.
She breaks down crying, and. Returning to the crater, Very cool perspective, however he's interrupted by our The reactions of and go a long way to portray the surprise we should be feeling at not just her, but the fact that anyone would be willing to jump into the ring with the monster that just flattened the village. where Tsuru's script takes over as she and finally expresses her. She gets rag dolled around, dropped on her head, launched across the battlefield, and yet she continues to find the courage to keep fighting. This anime original cut from Tokuyuki Matsutake focuses mostly on the movement element. As you can tell, minute details and correct models are sacrificed for fluid motion and the excellent timing that this cut has.
Upon realizing her opportunity she goes however, this fight was futile from the start as and is one of pure horror. Now within her unconscious mind we return to the previous flashback and as these stories go, her In a scene that HEAVILY inspired that scene from The Last despite not having any of the same staff working on it, before getting I found as Naruto lies defeated and Hinata can only spare a look over her shoulder as she's being taken away.
Naruto Vs Pain Episode 163 Samehadaku
This memory wakes her from her coma and She (wonderful Suzuki art), as she. The stoic self-proclaimed God the sacrifice she's making for seemingly no reason. This scene, while certainly open to interpretation, sells the entire reason why Pain didn't end her life instantly. A major element of Pain's character is based around self sacrifice, and in my opinion, his curiosity over her sacrifice forces him to investigate why she's going to these lengths. One last before she's for the last time. Audio cuts out completely to provide tension before the sound of. Some of the best dialogue in the entire series found in this episode.

With Hinata presumed dead, Toshiyuki Tsuru arguably puts in more effort and does a better job of building the relationship between Naruto and Hinata than the manga does. This is a great episode that cements my belief that 1:1 adaptations are boring and uninspired. It also does an excellent job of setting up the next one with Naruto's rampage about to begin!
